The worldwide YMCA explores how YMCAs in and around Toronto serve diverse community needs
Date: 22 July 2026
21st YMCA World Council, Toronto, Canada – Monday 20 July 2026
Through 16 excursion opportunities today, delegates explored Toronto’s dynamic neighbourhoods, iconic landmarks, and rich cultural tapestry. Every trip also brought participants closer to the work of local YMCA Member Associations.
Each excursion was linked to one or more of the four Vision 2030 themes: Community Wellbeing, Meaningful Work, Sustainable Planet and Just World.
Cooper Koo Family YMCA & Distillery District
Participants explore innovative urban YMCA programming, then wander the historic, pedestrian-only Distillery District. “I loved seeing how a YMCA fits right into a busy city neighbourhood, then walking the cobblestone streets of the Distillery District felt like stepping back in time.”
Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) & University of Toronto
A visit to Canada’s largest museum, with its collections on world cultures and Indigenous perspectives, followed by a stroll along Philosopher’s Walk at U of T. “Philosopher’s Walk was the perfect way to wind down after everything we’d just seen at the ROM.”
McDonald Family YMCA & Wagner Green YMCA
Two very different Toronto YMCA centres — one a brand-new community hub, the other focused on housing and employment support for young people. “Visiting both centres back-to-back showed me just how much the Y does for this city!”

Toronto Island and YMCA Day Camp
A ferry ride to the car-free Toronto Islands, including a visit to a YMCA Day Camp and time to relax on the beach. “Watching the campers in action reminded me why outdoor play matters so much for kids!”
Evergreen Brick Works
A former industrial site turned model for sustainability, with trails, green space, and hands-on environmental learning. “Walking this space made me think differently about what a city can look like.”
YMCA Cedar Glen Outdoor Centre & Organic Farm
A day in nature at Cedar Glen’s 263-acre outdoor centre, with hikes, team building, and a visit to the organic farm. “Getting my hands in the soil at the farm was such a nice change of pace.”
Niagara Falls & Niagara YMCA
A visit to Niagara Falls paired with a look at community programming from the YMCA of Niagara. “Standing in front of the Falls and hearing about the local Y’s work made the day feel bigger somehow.”
Woodland Cultural Centre
A visit to the site of the former Mohawk Institute Residential School, now home to Indigenous-led exhibitions and cultural programming. "This was a hard place to visit, but I left with a deeper understanding of history I hadn't fully learned before."
